One of the finest easy hikes on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Uncle Jim Trail winds through cool spruce-fir and aspen forest to a spectacular overlook perched right on the edge of the abyss. It's about 4.7 miles round trip with only around 230 feet of elevation change — gentle enough for most anyone — yet the payoff rivals trails many times harder, which makes it one of the most rewarding leg-stretchers on the quiet, high North Rim.

The trail is named for “Uncle Jim” Owens, a colorful character who served as the game warden on the Kaibab Plateau in the early 1900s and became famous as a mountain-lion hunter, guiding notable visitors after the big cats in the years when the plateau's deer herd was being “protected.” The trail begins at the east end of the North Kaibab Trailhead parking area, about two miles north of the Grand Canyon Lodge on Highway 67, near the mule corral. For the first mile it shares tread with the Ken Patrick Trail before branching right into a roughly two-mile loop out to Uncle Jim Point.

From the overlook the view is jaw-dropping. You gaze straight down onto the tight, endless switchbacks of the North Kaibab Trail as it plunges into Roaring Springs Canyon, across the great gulf of Bright Angel Canyon, and out to the canyon's named temples — Deva, Zoroaster, and Brahma — with the distant South Rim beyond and, on a clear day, the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff floating on the horizon. The forested, meadow-fringed walk to reach it is a pleasure in itself: cool and green, alive with wildflowers in summer, often surprisingly quiet, and a good place to spot mule deer, tassel-eared Kaibab squirrels, and abundant birdlife. Note that mule rides use this trail, so you may share the path with a string — step to the side, stand quietly, and let them pass.

The North Rim is highly seasonal, sitting above 8,000 feet and generally open only from mid-May through mid-October before winter snow closes the access road. One important note for planning: 2026 is a recovery season following the 2025 Dragon Bravo Fire, which destroyed the historic Grand Canyon Lodge and forced a lengthy closure of the North Rim. Expect reduced services and no in-park overnight lodging as the area rebuilds, so check the park's official North Rim status page before making the long drive out.

At this elevation the air is thin and the weather changeable, so bring water, sun protection, and a warm layer even on a summer day, and keep an eye out for the afternoon thunderstorms that build over the rim — lightning is a real danger at an exposed point like this. A park entrance fee applies. For anyone who's only known the crowded South Rim, the Uncle Jim Trail is a perfect, low-effort introduction to the quieter, higher, greener, and in many ways more magical side of the Grand Canyon.
