Buzzard Rock Hole is a clear, cold swimming hole on Passage Creek in the Elizabeth Furnace area of the George Washington National Forest, tucked into the folds of Massanutten Mountain near Strasburg, Virginia. It's one of the Shenandoah Valley's most beloved natural escapes — a deep, refreshing pool ringed by a broad rock ledge perfect for sunbathing and picnicking, all beneath the dramatic quartzite spine of Buzzard Rock high above.

The swimming hole is the reward of a lovely forest setting. The water runs clear, deep, and genuinely cold — wonderfully refreshing on a humid Virginia summer day — and the surrounding ledges make it easy to stake out a spot in the sun between dips. It's a favorite of families and locals looking to cool off in the shade of the mountains, and a classic stop on a hot Shenandoah afternoon.

An important safety note: despite the deep center, the bottom of the pool is rocky and shallow in places, which makes jumping or diving in genuinely dangerous — people have been hurt doing exactly that. Ease in rather than leaping, check the depth carefully every time (water levels change with the season and rainfall), and be mindful of the current near the edges of the hole, especially after rain when the creek runs higher and faster. There are no lifeguards.

Many visitors pair the swim with the excellent Buzzard Rock hike on the ridge above. Starting on the white-blazed Massanutten Trail, it climbs gradually along the creek before a short, steep, rocky pitch leads up to the rocky promontory of Buzzard Rock itself, with sweeping views over Fort Valley and the surrounding ridges. Depending on the route you choose, the hike runs anywhere from about 4 to 7 miles, so you can tailor it to your energy — then cap it off with a cool dip in the creek below.

The Elizabeth Furnace area around it is worth exploring in its own right. Named for a 19th-century iron furnace whose ruins still stand nearby, it's a hub of trails, picnic areas, and a Forest Service campground along Passage Creek, making it easy to turn a swim into a full day of hiking, history, and relaxing by the water in the heart of the George Washington National Forest.

For directions, the swimming hole is reached from the parking areas along the Fort Valley road near Elizabeth Furnace; look for the second paved lot and walk back along the road to the creek. Come prepared with water shoes for the rocky creek bed, drinking water, and sun protection, keep a close eye on kids near the water, and pack out all your trash to protect this well-loved spot. Late spring through early fall is prime, when the pool is at its most inviting — just treat the rocky bottom and the current with the respect they demand.
