Hike
Hiking Mount Washburn via Chittenden Road is the shortest and easiest route to the top. The trail was once a service road and is now a clear well packed trail with a steady, gradual incline. The trail starts at a parking area on Chittenden road.
Mount Washburn Trail via Chittenden Road is an out and back trail. The trail takes most hikers three to five hours to complete and is 5.8 miles there and back.
At the top of the mountain there is a shelter with some interpretive exhibits. The view from the peak can be seen from inside and outside the shelter. There are clear views that can be seen as you hike up Chittenden Road.
Wildlife is frequently seen by hikers on Chittenden Road. Hikers often see bighorn sheep and wildflowers along the trail. During the fall months grizzly bears are frequently seen in the Mount Washburn area.
It is recommended that hikers take this trail in the summer and early fall months. The trail is closed through the winter and spring due to heavy snow.
Chittenden Road is a fast and easy way for hikers to experience the views from Mount Washburn. Taking only a few hours this hike is a wonderful way to explore a new perspective of Yellowstone National Park.
