Hike

Washburn Spur Trail is an exciting 8-mile trail connecting the peak of Mount Washburn to Seven Mile Hole Trail near Canyon Village. Hikers typically hike the trail starting at Mount Washburn and descend to Canyon Village. Because of the elevation change the hike is easier to take in decent.

The trail can be taken in both directions, but hikers who are only hiking one way should arrange to have transportation at Canyon Village. Hikers can access the trailhead of Washburn Spur Trail by hiking to the peak of Mount Washburn using Chittenden Road or Mount Washburn Trail. As hikers ascend to the trailhead they should prepare for colder temperatures.

The trail is open during the summer and fall months. Some years snow lingers along the trail well into June and July.

The views and wildlife along Washburn Spur Trail are incredible sights to see. This area has bighorn sheep and wildflowers. From the top of Mount Washburn hikers can see the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. After the initial decent from Mount Washburn, the trail is forested and runs through many meadows.

This challenge of Washburn Spur Trail is a wonderful way to experience Mount Washburn and the beautiful Yellowstone River. This hike is a challenge that is a wonderful addition to any Yellowstone Trip.
