Pioneer Cabin Trail
Sun Valley
Hike and Mountain Bike
Pioneer Cabin Trail No. 122 climbs from the Corral Creek drainage east of Sun Valley to Pioneer Cabin, a small ski hut on a high ridge with a close view of the Pioneer Mountains. It is one of the most popular hikes in the Wood River Valley, on the Ketchum Ranger District of the Sawtooth National Forest.
The Pioneer Cabin Trailhead is at the end of Corral Creek Road. From Sun Valley, drive east on Trail Creek Road and turn onto the Corral Creek road, about 20 minutes in all. The trailhead sits just under 7,000 feet and serves both the Pioneer Cabin Trail and Long Gulch Trail No. 123. The Forest Service lists two picnic sites, a hitching rail with limited trailer parking and a vault toilet. There is no drinking water and no fee. The lot is small and fills on summer weekends, so come early.
From the trailhead the trail climbs about 2,500 feet in roughly 3.6 to 3.8 miles, on a long series of switchbacks through timber and then open slopes. Visit Sun Valley counts 23 of them. Most people hike it as an out-and-back of about 7.5 to 8.5 miles. A popular alternative is the loop that comes back down Long Gulch, about 8.8 miles with around 3,000 feet of climbing. Near the top the trail meets the Johnstone Creek trail, and the north face of Johnstone Peak comes into view. You can also reach the cabin from the Hailey side via the North Fork Hyndman Creek Trail or Johnstone Creek. Both are longer and steeper, and the North Fork Hyndman route gains about 1,400 feet in its final mile. Wildflowers usually peak in late July, and the Forest Service notes good elk viewing in the area.
Bikes are allowed and it is a known ride, but a hard one. MTB Project rates the trail Difficult, with an average grade of about 13 percent, much steeper pitches, and technical sections on the switchbacks. Most riders push part of the climb and ride down, or climb Long Gulch for the loop. Dogs are allowed on the trail. Bring water, since there is none at the trailhead or the cabin.
Union Pacific built Pioneer Cabin in 1937 as a ski hut for its new Sun Valley resort. Charles Proctor and Alf Engen chose the site, the cabin was doubled in size in 1938, and guides from the resort's ski touring school led trips there. Today it is a simple two-room shelter used by spring skiers and summer hikers. Sources put it at roughly 9,400 to 9,600 feet. The roof carries the painted line "The higher you get, the higher you get." A volunteer crew rebuilt the porch, door and foundation in 2018. The cabin has primitive bunks, and overnight stays are first come, first served with no reservations. There is no toilet or water at the cabin, so pack out everything you bring.
The trail is usually snow-free from early summer into fall, but expect snow and postholing on the upper switchbacks into June. Once snow closes the Corral Creek road, reaching the cabin becomes a much longer winter ski tour in the backcountry. Check with the Ketchum Ranger District for current road and trail conditions.

The original cabin was more of a hut. The front "porch" or landing was restored to the cabin in 2019 by a group of volunteers. A second room which doubled the size was added about a year after this photo.

Pioneer Cabin, nestled high in the Pioneer Mountains, is an enduring legacy to Sun Valley's storied past. Built by Union Pacific Railroad as a ski hut in 1937, the cabin still provides shelter for spring skiers and a popular lunch spot for summer hikers. Perched at 9,400 feet, the cabins front steps offer breathtaking views of the Pioneer Mountains. The cabin can be accessed from the Pioneer Cabin Trail or from the North Fork Hyndman Creek Trail. Both trails involve somewhat strenuous climbs. Wildlife viewing is great, particularly for elk.
