Camp, Hike, Kayak, and Swim

Red Creek is a long out and back trail that gives visitors access to a variety of activities in beautiful scenery. The trail is 6.3 miles long and is moderately difficult. Along the way visitors can see spectacular views and enjoy swimming in parts of the Red Creek where the water slows and deepens. The creek creates a deep canyon that has several beautiful waterfalls, natural water slides and unique rock formations. Hikers should come prepared with food and water as there is no drinking water available on the trail.

Red Creek is also known for it's white water rafting access. Kayakers frequently enjoy these rapids. Only swimmers and kayakers with experience should approach the water here and should check for water levels and safety before entering the water.

There is a primitive campsite available for those wanting to take a break in the hike and enjoy the nature through the night. Campers need to carry everything they need in and out with them, and leave this campsite a pristine respite.

Red Creek | DIY Outdoors | West Virginia University

Dolly Sods Wilderness has 47 miles of trails within 17,371 acres. Red Creek drops sharply in the steep canyon to provide swimming holes and waterfalls. Nice swimming spots that are accessible exist along the first mile of the Red Creek Trail from the Laneville Trailhead. If you want more excitement however, check out two spots deeper in the wilderness. These spots mark the ends of a steep canyon that is known for waterfalls and slides. The first is at the forks of Red Creek, two miles from the Blackbird Knob Trailhead. This site includes multiple waterfalls and deep holes within a short section, with two 15 footers and a 200 foot slide being the highlights. The second spot is at the junction of Red Creek and Fisher Spring Run. It includes a few cascading waterfalls and nice spots to cool off. Brochure (pdf) Map (pdf)
