Rivers Fishing

Canoe, Kayak, Swim, and Whitewater

River Access Hole is a spot on the North Fork of the South Branch of the Potomac River. This scenic forested area has beautiful rock formations and running water, creating breathtaking peaceful views for all visitors.

In this area the water is shallow and slow enough for wading and swimming. Waders and swimmers should wear foot protection as the river bed is extremely rocky and varies in depth unexpectedly in some places. Swimmers swim at their own risk and should be cautious when approaching the water. The water here is known for it's fantastic fly fishing, especially for being the best trout fishing in West Virginia.

This point of river access is also great for kayaks, canoes and rafts. Anyone floating the river, regardless of vehicle, should be cautious of rocks and rapids in this area. This water provides a scenic challenge for anyone wishing to enjoy floating on the Potomac.

South Branch of the Potomac(Smoke Hole Picnic Area to Petersburg) | DIY Outdoors | West Virginia Uni

This is a classic float/fishing trip in a long beautiful canyon that features massive rock formations and great camping spots. This is truly one of the most beautiful areas in West Virginia. The first seven miles of the run are beside Smoke Hole Rd, so short trips are possible. From the picnic area bridge to Petersburg is 21 miles, while the trip from Big Bend Campground to Petersburg is 15 miles. The rapids are consistent class I-II with a couple class II + (Landslide Rapid upstream of Blue Rock and an old dam soon after joining the North Fork. Keep an eye out for eagles here. 21 miles. Class I-II+
