Sweetwater Day Use Area is a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers park on the northeast arm of Allatoona Lake, the 12,010-acre reservoir the Corps built on the Etowah River in the late 1940s. It sits in Cherokee County about 9 km west of downtown Canton, at the end of Fields Chapel Road, and shares a peninsula with the Corps-run Sweetwater Campground next door. The main draw is a sand beach with a roped swim area on a quiet cove, backed by a playground, picnic tables and a large group shelter.
From I-75, take exit 290 and follow Highway 20 east toward Canton for about 10 miles, then turn right on Fields Chapel Road at the gas station. From I-575, take the Highway 5 exit, use Butterworth Road to reach Highway 20, head west 2.6 miles and turn left on Fields Chapel Road. Drive about 1.4 miles, pass the campground entrance on the right, and the road ends at the day use gate (1505 Fields Chapel Road, Canton, GA 30114). Parking is inside the gate only. The Corps does not allow walk-ins, trailer or bus parking, or parking outside the gate, and 40 spaces are held for the shelter reservation until 1 p.m. before opening to everyone else.
The beach sits on a small side cove rather than the open lake. It is a sand strip with a roped area off the shore, and the Corps does not publish depths, so wade in and check before anyone jumps. Allatoona is a warm southern reservoir and the shallows heat up well by midsummer, while early June water can still feel cool. There is no current to speak of, but there are no lifeguards either. The Corps says its designated swim areas are unsupervised and swimming is at your own risk, and swimming at boat ramps and courtesy docks is prohibited. Allatoona has a long drowning record (281 deaths between 1950 and 2006), so keep children within reach and put life jackets on weak swimmers. Pets and alcohol are not permitted in the day use area.
Entry costs a Corps day use fee, not a free visit. Allatoona's Corps day use parks charge $5 per vehicle, which covers beach use and boat launching for that day, and the Corps annual day use pass is honored. Campers registered at Sweetwater Campground may use the day use area as part of their stay. The park operates seasonally, and opening dates and hours are not posted online, so call the Allatoona Lake office at 678-721-6700 before a trip, especially in spring and after Labor Day.
The Coosa River Basin Initiative samples Sweetwater Park for E. coli every week from Memorial Day to Labor Day and posts results through Swim Guide. Historically it has passed 60 to 95 percent of the time, which means it does fail some weeks, most often after heavy rain washes runoff into the cove. Check the latest result before you swim and stay out for a day or two after storms. The Corps also lowers Allatoona each fall toward its winter level, so late in the season the waterline moves out and the beach widens.
Beyond the beach, the group shelter seats up to 100 and can be reserved on Recreation.gov, with a sand volleyball court and horseshoe pits beside it. Canoes and kayaks can launch from the shoreline, and Sweetwater Campground next door has more than 150 reservable sites, many on the water, plus its own dock and a separate beach for registered campers.
