Hike and Swim

Muir Beach is a little gem nestled away in the hills North of San Francisco, not far from the Muir Woods National Monument. There's a great beach and an entire network of trails. To get to the beach is a delightful 0.2 miles along a bridge and sandy pathway. You'll find plenty of informational placards along the way, great for kids, or even the mildly curious adult.

Once you're here, you can sit and enjoy the beach, get started on the Coastal Trail, explore along the cliffside trails to the south, or simply enjoy a picnic at the tables near the parking lot while you take in the beautiful sunset over the Pacific.

Muir Beach, California - Wikipedia

Muir Beach is a census designated place (CDP), unincorporated community, and beach on the Pacific Ocean. The community is located 16.5 miles (26.6 km) northwest of San Francisco in western Marin County, California, United States. Unlike many other entities in the area, it is not named directly in honor of conservationist John Muir; instead, it was named after Muir Woods National Monument to capitalize on the latter’s popularity.[7] The population was 304 at the 2020 census.[6] The community itself flanks the northwest side of the beach.

I went to Muir Beach with my family, and I was really charmed by this area on the coast that I'd never even heard of, despite having grown up an hour away. We had originally planned to go to Muir Woods National Monument, but found that we'd picked a day when it was exceptionally crowded, and could not find parking, and decided as a group to head on down the road and see what else we could find. Well, we went through a part of Mt Tamalpais State Park, and eventually found ourselves here at the beach. (There was plenty of parking). We took the Coastal Trail up to a cliffside just barely south of the beach, which gave such beautiful vistas. We could see the western end of San Francisco, but not the Golden Gate Bridge, and we could look at all of the texture of the ocean along the coast there. We hiked back down, and explored the beach a little more until it was time for sunset. I enjoyed my time there and would love to return.

We just went and enjoyed the beach but it was great. It was a cooler weekday so there weren't a ton of people. It was just really nice. They've done a lot to make this a great recreation area.
