Hike and Swim

Twin Falls is one of the best waterfall-and-swimming-hole hikes in Texas, a scenic stretch of Austin's beloved Barton Creek Greenbelt where the creek pours over limestone ledges into clear, cool pools. Reached by a moderate trail through the green canyon of the Greenbelt, it's a genuine urban oasis, a place where Austinites escape the heat among the cypress and limestone just minutes from the city, and it pairs beautifully with nearby Sculpture Falls a little farther up the creek.

The falls are the draw. Twin Falls typically features a double stream of water pouring over limestone ledges into a shallow pool, a lovely spot to wade, cool off and snap photos, with the pool often only about waist-deep. About 10 to 15 minutes farther along the trail lies Sculpture Falls, a larger waterfall with a deeper swimming hole and clear, cool water (around 70 degrees in summer) that's ideal for a proper dip. Together they make a rewarding out-and-back of roughly 3 miles, moderately challenging, through classic Greenbelt scenery.

The one thing that makes or breaks a visit is water level. Barton Creek's flow depends entirely on recent rainfall, and the best time to visit is a couple of days after a good rain; in dry spells or a dry year, the creek can slow to a trickle or stop, and the falls may not be flowing at all. Checking current creek conditions before you go is the difference between a swim and a dry limestone hike.

Access is easy from the Greenbelt's main trailheads. Many hikers use the entry point along the Capital of Texas Highway (Loop 360) and head west a few miles to reach Twin Falls and then Sculpture Falls, though several Greenbelt access points work; choosing one closer to the falls shortens the walk. The trail is popular and the falls draw crowds on warm weekends, so early mornings are quieter.

The limestone is beautiful and slick, so footing deserves care, and the pools' depths vary with flow, so it's worth checking before jumping and treating this as a wade-and-swim rather than a diving spot. There are no lifeguards on this natural creek.

Come with water shoes for the slick limestone, sun protection for the open ledges, plenty of drinking water, and a swimsuit and towel for the pools, best after recent rain. For a double-waterfall hike to clear swimming holes right inside Austin, Twin Falls, with Sculpture Falls just beyond, is one of the city's finest outdoor escapes.
