Hike and Swim

The Hill of Life is the steepest, most notorious stretch of Austin's Barton Creek Greenbelt, a rugged climb (or descent) at the western end of the Greenbelt near the Scottish Woods trailhead that mountain bikers and trail runners treat as a genuine challenge. In about half a mile it gains or drops roughly 300 feet over rocky, technical terrain, making it the toughest single section of the entire Greenbelt and a rite of passage for Austin's outdoor crowd.

The name captures the effort. Going down, it's a knee-testing scramble over loose rock and ledges; going up, it's a lung-and-legs grind that riders and runners take pride in conquering. The trail is rocky and narrow in spots with real water crossings, so proper footwear genuinely matters, and the reward for the descent is arriving at the creek at the bottom.

At the base sits the Hill of Life Dam, a scenic spot to cool off and, when the water is up, to swim. This is Barton Creek, so like most Hill Country creeks the falls and pools here are seasonal: after good rains the area is beautiful and can draw a crowd, while in dry spells the creek can dry up entirely. From the bottom, the trail connects into the wider Greenbelt network, including the popular route to nearby Sculpture Falls, so the Hill of Life is often done as part of a longer loop.

The steepness and loose, rocky footing are the real hazards here, especially on the descent and doubly so when the rock is wet from a creek crossing or recent rain, so this is a section that rewards care and good shoes rather than speed. It's genuinely strenuous in the Texas heat.

The best conditions come a couple of days after good rain, when the creek and the Hill of Life Dam are flowing and swimmable; summer afternoons are brutally hot on the exposed rock, so early mornings are far better. Whether you're a mountain biker chasing the challenge, a trail runner logging vert, or a hiker heading down to the dam for a swim, the Hill of Life is the Barton Creek Greenbelt at its most demanding and rewarding.
