Tucked into the rolling hills east of Idaho Falls, Blacktail Park is the main gateway to Ririe Reservoir — a sprawling 1,500-acre lake with some 32 miles of shoreline and warm-weather fun in every direction. Anglers do well here too. Ririe Reservoir holds rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, and the floating dock makes it easy to drop a line whether or not you have a boat. Fishing generally runs strong from late May into November, with spring and fall the prime windows for cooler water and active fish. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water — the eastern Idaho high-desert sun is no joke out on an open reservoir — along with a hat and layers, since afternoon breezes can pick up across all that open water.

Blacktail is a day-use park (a small entrance fee usually applies), managed by Bonneville County Parks & Recreation.
