Canoe and Swim

Tucked into the rolling hills east of Idaho Falls, Blacktail Park is the main gateway to Ririe Reservoir — a sprawling 1,500-acre lake with some 32 miles of shoreline and warm-weather fun in every direction. When summer settles over eastern Idaho, this is where locals come to cool off, and it's easy to see why: Blacktail pairs wide-open water and big, mountain-edged sky with the kind of easy access that makes a spur-of-the-moment lake day simple.

The park itself is built for a full day on the water. There's a designated swimming area for an afternoon dip, a boat-launch ramp, a floating fishing dock, and day-use amenities like picnic tables, covered shelters, and restrooms — everything you need to set up a basecamp and stay a while. Park, unload, and you're minutes from the water.

Above all, the reservoir is made for paddling. Launch a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard from Blacktail and you can spend hours tracing the shoreline into quiet coves and boat-only corners of the lake that road-bound visitors never see — perfect for a private picnic, a swim off the bow, or just a peaceful float with the Snake River Range on the horizon. On hot afternoons the open water also fills with boaters, water-skiers, and tubers, so summer weekends carry a lively, fun-in-the-sun energy; early mornings and weekdays are calmer if you'd rather have the glassy water to yourself.

Anglers do well here too. Ririe Reservoir holds rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, and the floating dock makes it easy to drop a line whether or not you have a boat. Fishing generally runs strong from late May into November, with spring and fall the prime windows for cooler water and active fish. Bring sunscreen and plenty of water — the eastern Idaho high-desert sun is no joke out on an open reservoir — along with a hat and layers, since afternoon breezes can pick up across all that open water.

Blacktail is a day-use park (a small entrance fee usually applies), managed by Bonneville County Parks & Recreation. It's open through the warm season and sits less than half an hour from Idaho Falls, making it one of the easiest, most rewarding places in the region to spend a hot summer day. Whether you're launching a paddleboard, casting for trout, or just looking for a place to swim and grill with the family, Ririe Reservoir delivers a classic Idaho lake day with very little effort to get there.
