Bowman Lake Campground is one of Glacier National Park's most coveted primitive campgrounds, set at the foot of long, narrow Bowman Lake deep in the remote North Fork region on the park's quiet northwest side. Reaching it is part of the appeal and part of the challenge: it lies about 32 miles north of the West Entrance by way of the unpaved, washboard North Fork Road and the rough, narrow Bowman Lake Road past the tiny outpost of Polebridge. The drive is slow and not suitable for RVs or trailers, which keeps crowds down and the atmosphere wonderfully wild.

The campground has roughly 48 first-come, first-served sites tucked into the forest along the lakeshore, each with a picnic table, fire ring and bear-resistant food storage. Facilities are deliberately basic: vault (pit) toilets and, in season, drinking water, but no hookups, no dump station and no showers. Because it is first-come only and much loved, it fills early on summer days, so arriving in the morning is the way to secure a site.

Bowman Lake itself is the reward, a mirror-calm, glacially fed lake framed by Rainbow Peak, Reuter Peak and the surrounding wilderness. It is superb for paddling a canoe or kayak, cold-water swimming, fishing and simply watching the light change on the water, and the Bowman Lake Trail runs the shoreline toward the head of the lake and beyond into the backcountry. This is prime grizzly country with no cell service, so bear-aware habits and full self-sufficiency are essential, but for paddlers and tent campers it is one of the most magical corners of the park.
