Many Glacier Campground sits in what many visitors consider the most spectacular corner of Glacier National Park: the Many Glacier valley on the park's northeast side, cradled among towering peaks near the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake. Reached by a road that runs about 12 miles west from Babb, roughly 20 miles from the St. Mary area, it is a coveted base camp ringed by Grinnell Point, Mount Wilbur and the glacier-carved walls that give the valley its name, with the historic Many Glacier Hotel and the Swiftcurrent Motor Inn nearby.
The campground has around 110 sites, a handful of which can take RVs up to 35 feet, with flush toilets and drinking water. Sites include picnic tables, fire rings and bear-resistant food storage, and this is one of the busiest, most sought-after campgrounds in the park, so it is on the reservation system and books out almost immediately when sites are released. It typically opens for the summer season and closes in early fall.
The reason for the crowds is the hiking. Some of Glacier's most famous trails start at or near the campground: the climb to Grinnell Glacier past turquoise Grinnell Lake, the cirque hike to Iceberg Lake, the route to Ptarmigan Tunnel, and gentler walks around Swiftcurrent and Josephine Lakes, where boat tours run in summer. This is prime grizzly country and a hotspot for wildlife, with regular sightings of bears, moose and bighorn sheep right in the valley. For hikers who want to step from their tent straight onto legendary trails beneath the peaks, Many Glacier is hard to beat.

Many Glacier is an area within Glacier National Park in the U.S. state of Montana. The Many Glacier region is located north of the Going-to-the-Sun Road, on the east side of the park. Lake Sherburne is the large lake in the area and the Many Glacier Hotel, the largest hotel within the park, is along the shore of the adjacent Swiftcurrent Lake. The hotel and surrounding buildings are a National Historic Landmark, with original construction dating back to 1915. Many Glacier is surrounded by the high peaks of the Lewis Range, and many hiking trails can be accessed from the area. The region is noted for numerous lakes, waterfalls and dense coniferous forests interspersed with alpine meadows. Major sites in the immediate vicinity that can be accessed by trails include Lake Josephine, Grinnell Lake, Grinnell Glacier, Cracker Lake, Granite Park Chalet, Iceberg Cirque and the Ptarmigan Tunnel, a hiking tunnel carved through the mountainside during the 1930s. Tour boats allow visitors an opportunity to venture onto Swiftcurrent Lake. Other activities in the region include ranger-guided nature hikes, horseback riding, fishing and camping.
