Mountain Bike
The Wolverine Creek Trail is a mellow, cruise-friendly route in the popular Kelly Canyon trail network east of Ririe, Idaho, on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest above the South Fork of the Snake River. It's consistently rated among the best-liked rides in the Kelly Canyon area — not because it's hard or flashy, but because it's a relaxed, scenic way to put in some easy miles in beautiful country.
Rather than tight, technical singletrack, Wolverine Creek is a doubletrack that runs roughly 4.5 miles, starting off South Fork Road and climbing gently to the Wolverine trailhead. The surface is mostly hard-packed dirt — smooth and fast, though it can get genuinely dusty in the dry heat of late summer — and there are few real obstacles or steep pitches, which makes it a great pick for newer riders, families, or anyone wanting a low-stress spin through the foothills. It rolls through open sagebrush slopes and pockets of timber, with the wider Kelly Canyon country and the South Fork corridor spread out around you.
This is genuinely multi-use terrain: the same doubletrack is used by hikers, horseback riders, and, in summer, dirt bikes and ATVs, so keep your ears open for motorized traffic and yield courteously. Because it plugs directly into the broader Kelly Canyon network, Wolverine Creek is easy to link with neighboring trails and loops if you want to build a longer or more varied day out.
The season generally runs from late spring through fall, once the ground dries out. This is dry, exposed eastern-Idaho high country, so the main considerations are heat, sun, and dust — carry plenty of water, wear sun protection, and don't count on shade. Winter transforms the place entirely, when nearby Kelly Canyon becomes a downhill ski hill and the surrounding trails turn to snow. Bring basic tools and a spare tube, watch for other trail users, and enjoy one of the friendlier rides in the South Fork country.
